With over 3 300 Geographical Indications registered in the European Union, EU quality policy aims at protecting the names of specific products to promote their unique characteristics linked to their geographical origin as well as traditional know-how.
At the Chengdu event, the EU’s GI schemes and the benefits of the EU-China GI agreement were described and explained to importers, distributors, e-commerce representatives, retailers and other food professionals. These schemes protect the names of products that come from a specific region and follow a particular traditional production process. The GI recognition enables consumers to trust and distinguish quality products while also helping producers to market their products better.

Description
The Chengdu GI event featured presentations on the successful marketing of GI products both in the EU and in China, highlighting the business advantages regarding price and promotion for GI products.
From the EU, the successful business cases of Steirisches Kürbiskernöl PGI, a pumpkin oil from Austria with a characteristic greenish colour and roasted nut taste and Vipavska dolina PDO, a range of traditional wines from Slovenia were presented by EU Member State representatives.
From China, a representative from Xi Ge Estate winery in Ningxia presented the successful story of Wine in Helan Mountain East Region, which was granted geographical indication status by China’s Committee of National Geographical Indication in 2003 and which is one of the 100 Chinese GIs protected in the Agreement.
During these GI presentations, speakers highlighted how GI product designation has economic benefits for food producers and consumers. GI products are regarded by consumers as high quality, premium-level food products and are willing to pay more for such products.
The EU Geographical Indications Conference’s climax was the cocktail celebration and tasting of more than 35 EU GI products by event participants.
